New Travel Photograph: Waterfalls Below Galovac Jezero

Waterfalls Below Galovac Jezero in Plitvice Lakes National Park

Multiple streams flow over a sharp drop between two of the myriad lakes within Croatia’s Plitvice Lakes National Park. (Click for larger image) I made this image during a day trip to the park with my wife Ruth. We explored a significant portion of the park, but serious photography was extremely difficult due to the crowds of people everywhere as well as the very sunny weather! Waterfalls very often look their best under cloudy skies, so to make this image I had to wait for a lull in the crowds as well as a cloud over the sun. This national park is absolutely amazing; I’ve never seen any landscape quite like it. It’s got many, many lakes, each formed in a plateau made by seismic activity and erosion. In between each of the lakes is a waterfall. You can see a lot more photos and learn about the park here and here.

New travel photo: Broadway Tower

Over the past two weeks I led a small group on an in-depth, personalized photo tour through the heart of England. Our first few days were spent in the Cotswolds area, in the southwest of England. We stayed in the picturesque little village of Broadway, which is near a country park and tower of the same name. Broadway Tower is a folly (basically, a fake castle) built in the late 1700s. We scouted this location over a couple of very gray, cold and windy days, hoping we’d get a nice sunrise before we had to move on in our itinerary. On the last day in Broadway, we were treated to a wonderful sunrise. This is one of the photos from the several dozen I made before, during and after sunrise; I’ll post more on my web site over the coming weeks. Click the image to view the larger version. New travel photograph: Due Amici

Due AmiciI made this image in Gallipoli, southern Italy, while traveling in Puglia during February 2013. The sun had already gone down and the light was very dim within the narrow streets and alleyways. Using a tripod and a relatively long exposure (1.3 seconds) I was able to make the picture. I love how this photo expresses the personality and character of a typical southern Italian town without including people. In Italian, “Due Amici” means “Two Friends”. New travel photo: Jardine Auguste Icart, Nice, France

A small plaza in Nice, France is lit by the late afternoon sun on a warm spring day. A flying pigeon also makes an appearance in the picture.
I’ve processed this image as both color and black-and-white, and I’m not sure which version I prefer. Your thoughts?

New travel photo: Apricale, Italy

I made this image during our Italy Photo Tour in October 2012. The village of Apricale is high in the Maritime Alps, not far from the Mediterranean and the French border. Our group stayed there for two nights and had a fantastic time exploring the area. We’d scouted this location the previous afternoon and the entire group returned in the pre-dawn hours to photograph the sunrise. The clouds never gave way, but we were treated to calm weather and clear visibility, lending a sparkling quality to the town lights. Click the image for the full size version.
